I’m Lang Chen. I live in Adelaide, South Australia, with my partner, our two children, and one very patient dog. Most of what I know about light I learned somewhere else first: as a chemical engineer, in geochemistry and astronomy research, at sea as a ship’s captain, and through the long work of building companies, backing a few others, and following wherever technology goes next.

Those years gave photography its foundations. Science tells me where to stand and when to be there. The sea taught me patience, and respect for weather I cannot argue with. Two kids taught me that the best moments are quiet and quick, and that turning up matters more than being clever.

I am not fearless. I simply keep walking towards the things I do not yet understand: a dark road, an unfamiliar coast, a sky I have only read about. That is where the photographs are, and life is far more interesting out there.

Field Plan · 2026 – 27

I plan my year around light — where it falls, when it returns, and how briefly it stays. These four journeys are already on the calendar, each built around a window that opens once a year and closes quickly. Sharing them here is my way of showing the work that happens long before the shutter.

Oct 2026Central Australian outback. The last weeks of core season, when the galaxy leans into the west soon after dusk and the desert night comes early. New moon, no towns for hours in any direction, and a short window each evening that has to be used well.
Mar 2027Aoraki Mackenzie, New Zealand. Aurora australis activity peaks around the equinox, and the Mackenzie Basin holds some of the darkest certified skies on earth. Going for the southern light over the Southern Alps — and staying long enough to earn one clear night.
Jun 2027Mount Gambier, South Australia. After the autumn rains, ghost fungi light up the pine forest floor for only a few weeks. Photographing them means minutes-long exposures in near-total darkness, kneeling in wet needles — and it is one of the quietest, strangest joys I know.
Oct 2027Dolomites, Italy. The larches turn gold in the week before the first snow, and the nights grow long enough for real darkness above the Tre Cime. Two weeks on foot, working the same faces at dawn and after dusk until the weather decides.
